Why High Achieving Women Stay Stuck in Fight or Flight (and how to finally reset your nervous system...)

You worked for the career.

You raised the children.

You built the life.

You checked every box.

You attained an enviable degree of success among family, friends and colleagues - even your acquaintances.


And yet your body still feels anxious, exhausted, tense, overwhelmed, or unable to fully settle in and enjoy the finer moments in life: nature, your friends, fun activities, your pets, your next vacation.

If you're a woman over 40, you probably know that gut-wrenching feeling of fight or flight where you're either right on the edge of screaming, or quietly trying to avoid crawling out of your skin on a day-to-day basis.

If this sounds familiar, you are not failing. You are not doing self-care wrong. And you are not alone.

Many high-achieving women over 40 are living with nervous systems that have been operating in chronic fight-or-flight for years; sometimes decades.

The problem is that stress becomes so normalized, we start believing it’s just “life.” In fact, many of us start to believe there is no way out and we just have to learn to live in this new reality after the age of 40. This is where scientifically proven somatic exercises and yoga come in to rewire and repattern your nervous system.


What Fight-or-Flight Looks Like in Midlife


Here's a surprising fact many women are unaware of: it doesn't always look like panic or anxiety.


More often, it's a gradual pattern that over time looks like:

  • Waking at 3 a.m. with a racing mind

  • Feeling exhausted but unable to rest

  • Carrying constant tension in your body

  • Feeling responsible for everyone else

  • Struggling to set boundaries without guilt

  • Over-functioning, over-giving, over-managing

  • Feeling anxious even when life looks “fine”

  • Losing access to joy, ease, and presence


Many women say, “I’ve done the yoga, the meditation, the journaling - why do I still feel this way?”

You feel this way because nervous system dysregulation is not a mindset issue.

And more importantly, it doesn't signify a fail on your part.

It is a body-based survival pattern.

Your system has learned to stay on alert, even when nothing is wrong in the present moment.


Why High-Achieving Women Get Stuck Here


High-achieving women are often incredibly capable. In fact, many of us are perfectionists, and we take care of everyone but ourselves: children, parents, friends, even pets.

We hold everything together.

We anticipate everyone’s needs.

We push through exhaustion.

We override our own signals.

But the body keeps score.

Eventually, it starts speaking louder:

Tension. Anxiety. Burnout. Insomnia. Irritability. Numbness. Disconnection.

These are not signs you are broken.

They are signs your nervous system is asking for safety.


The Missing Link: Nervous System Regulation


This is where somatic work changes everything.

Instead of trying to think your way out of stress, you learn how to regulate your body directly through:


  • Breathwork

  • Gentle yoga

  • Vagus nerve support

  • Somatic awareness practices

  • Nervous system mapping

  • Simple 2–25 minute daily tools (yes, a smaller time commitment a much higher likelihood you'll repeat them until they repattern the way your body responds to stress)


These practices teach your body something essential:

You are safe now.

And when the body believes that, everything begins to shift. And I do man everything.
